12-Day Tour Itinerary

This itinerary is a sample and small items may be changed or rearranged to capitalize on additional opportunities and build the best adventure possible.

  • Day 1

    Lisbon

Welcome to Portugal, Europe’s West Coast. Sometimes called the Atlantic Pearl, this magical land feels both familiar and new. We’ll begin with an afternoon walking tour of Lisbon led by a local guide. As the second-oldest European capital, the city brims with history and charm. Afterward, enjoy some time to shop or explore before our welcome dinner together.

  • Day 2

    Lisbon

This morning we’ll explore Belém, the waterfront district rich with maritime history. Visit the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, then step inside Quake, an immersive museum that recreates the city’s devastating 1755 earthquake. Along the way, we’ll taste Pastel de Nata, Portugal’s famous custard tart. The afternoon is yours to spend exploring. Perhaps ride historic Tram 28 or visit the National Tile Museum.

  • Day 3

    Sintra & Cabo da Roca

A short drive takes us to Sintra, where we’ll explore the fairytale-like Pena Palace and the medieval Castle of the Moors. After lunch we’ll continue to Cabo da Roca, continental Europe’s westernmost point. Those who wish can begin an optional six-mile hike along Portugal’s dramatic Atlantic coastline from this breathtaking spot.

  • Day 4

    Óbidos & Nazaré

We’ll bid Lisbon farewell and journey to the medieval town of Óbidos. Enclosed by 14th-century walls, its cobbled lanes and whitewashed houses are straight out of a storybook. After lunch we’ll continue to the seaside village of Nazaré, where we’ll enjoy dinner and settle in for the night.

  • Day 5

    Nazaré

Known worldwide for its massive waves, Nazaré draws surfers from across the globe. From a cliffside overlook we’ll watch surfers take on the Atlantic swells, then step inside a chapel adorned with Portugal’s trademark tilework. The afternoon offers a chance to relax on the beach or wander the town before dinner together. We’ll spend a leisurely afternoon exploring the little town and relaxing on the beach before dinner.

  • Day 6

    Coimbra

We continue north to Coimbra, home to the oldest university in the Portuguese-speaking world. After lunch, we’ll tour the University of Coimbra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an unforgettable baroque library. Tonight we’ll enjoy dinner followed by a Fado performance, Portugal’s traditional folk music.

  • Day 7

    Schist Village Hike & Porto

Adventurers may join an optional morning hike to a schist village, where stone houses and timeless traditions create a setting that is truly beguiling. Others may prefer a relaxed morning in Coimbra. After lunch we’ll drive north to Porto, arriving in time to explore an underground open-air market before dinner.

  • Day 8

    Porto

A local guide will lead us on a walking tour of Porto, with its UNESCO-listed old town and architectural treasures. The afternoon is free for shopping, relaxing in riverside cafés, or revisiting highlights from the tour.

  • Day 9

    Porto

Today is yours to choose your own adventure. Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge to tour port wine cellars, cruise the Douro River, explore the ornate Stock Exchange Palace, or spend time on a nearby beach. Porto is also excellent for shopping, offering great finds at reasonable prices.

  • Day 10

    Peneda-Gerês National Park

We’ll trade city streets for Portugal’s only national park. A scenic drive takes us to the highlands, where we’ll hike 6.5 miles along ancient trails past waterfalls and swimming holes. Highlights include Arado Waterfall and the crystal-clear Green Well. Tonight we’ll stay in a lodge inside the park.

  • Day 11

    Seven Lagoons & Braga

With hiking legs well-trained, we’ll set out on a seven-mile trek to the famed Seven Lagoons, a series of cascading pools perfect for swimming and photography. Afterward, we’ll drive to Braga, one of Portugal’s most historic and livable cities, for our final stop.

  • Day 12

    Braga

We’ll close with a light day in Braga, a city whose history stretches back more than 2,000 years. Highlights include the Braga Cathedral, Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary, and the Santa Barbara Gardens. The afternoon is yours to relax or wander before we gather for a farewell dinner, celebrating the journey we’ve shared.

What to expect

This is a group adventure right from the beginning and from the moment you sign up, we will make sure you feel prepared, excited, and supported. You'll hear history where it actually happened, gain confidence as a traveler, and experience the kind of camaraderie that only comes from shared adventure.

Before departure:

  • Group calls: You’ll be invited to two group calls where you can ask questions, meet fellow travelers, and get a feel for what’s ahead.

  • Packing lists & recommended reading: To help you prepare, we’ll send a packing list and recommended reading list ahead of time—so when you step off the plane, you're ready to immerse yourself in the journey.

While traveling:

  • Arrival: When you arrive, we’ll be there to greet you at the airport and take you to our hotel to drop your bags—no stress, no guesswork. You’ll receive a detailed itinerary booklet, and everything you need to start exploring immediately.

  • Balance of structure & freedom: Each day begins with breakfast at your hotel before setting out on that day's adventure. Expect a mix of guided walking tours that bring history to life and free time to explore at your own pace. Lunchtime? We’ll point you to the best local spots. When it’s time to meet for an afternoon activity, a quick WhatsApp notification will keep you on track.* Evenings are for sharing stories and enjoying great meals together. As we walk to dinner as a group, you'll find yourself laughing over the day’s experiences and forming friendships that will last long after the trip ends. Before bed, you'll receive a message with any updates for the next day’s itinerary.

*We use a WhatsApp group to communicate with everyone in-country and alert you to potential schedule changes. You will be required to use this platform during our trip. A key benefit of using WhatsApp is that it doesn’t require cell service to function—as long as you have a data package, you will be able to stay in contact with everyone. This can be a significant cost savings if you opt for purchasing an eSIM card for the country.

  • You can expect 3-star accommodations in central, walkable locations with lots to see and do right outside the hotel door. Rooms will be comfortable but not luxurious. You’ll want to be prepared to climb stairs because many of the prime-location hotels that we stay in do not have elevators.

Rooming assignments: Our tour is priced based on double occupancy, so if you’re joining us as a solo traveler you will be paired up with a roommate unless you purchase a single room supplement at the time of booking.

  • Breakfast and most dinners are included in your trip fee (see list of inclusions below for more details). Each morning you’ll eat breakfast in the hotel and each evening our group will gather for dinner together in delicious local restaurants. You will be responsible for your own lunch, but we will always be happy to make recommendations.

Vegetarian options are always available. Other special diet requests should be made at the time of booking. While we will make every effort to accommodate you, we cannot guarantee options for all dietary needs in every location.

  • Once you’ve signed up for a trip we will send you a packing list. We always plan an opportunity to do laundry approximately halfway through the trip and most pack in carry-on sized luggage.

While not required, packing in a carry-on can avoid logistical nightmares if an airline loses your luggage. And they’re easier to carry up hotel stairs!

What’s included—and what’s not

We want you to feel confident about what’s covered in your trip cost and what extra expenses to plan for. By covering the essentials and giving you flexibility in other areas, we ensure a balance of structure and freedom—so you get the most out of your trip.
